A very normal young delivery boy must make a not-so normal delivery in an equally strange world.

What is Hum from the Farlands?

Hum from the Farlands is an independent animated series about a young mail-assistant named Hum who embarks on a journey to deliver a mysterious package tied inextricably to the past, present, and future of the Farlands.

In the Farlands, the animation exists diegetically as a force that determines the reality the characters live in. The strange box Hum must deliver affects the animation, and Hum must grapple with both the implications of its importance, and its connection to him.

At its core, Hum from the Farlands is a story about what it means to live in an indifferent world.

Visual Development

The Farlands draws from the geography and cultural texture of North America, reinterpreted through a steady and subtle layer of distortion. Familiar landscapes and structures are preserved, but altered enough to keep it quietly uncanny.

Character Design

The characters and people present in the Farlands intentionally resist easy classification. While they generally echo human structure, they might have vastly differing proportions, anatomy, or behavior. Many Farlanders are inspired by real world animals and plants, but are deconstructed and recombined in ways that make them difficult to define.

The goal was not to create crazy creatures that feel totally alien, but denizens affected by the same distorted familiarity as the broader setting.

Story

The story of Hum from the Farlands is driven by both spoken and unspoken interaction. The narrative is carried through dialogue, and also through a character’s visual expression and body language.

The framing, pacing, and composition of a scene become added layers that carry meaning to the audience beyond dialogue.
